Scooptram hydrostatic transmission efficient power source for underground mines

Efficient, effective and powerful - safety for profitable underground mining operations. Power transmission system selection in the equipment results determinant for these magnitudes. Today with new trackless underground mobile loads of all kinds, particularly scooptrams, hydrostatic drive represents a much more efficient power supply that carries productivity to its maximum.

The Efficiency Challenge Underground

Underground mining is a particularly harsh application. Space is tight, air circulation restricted and the ground hard. In this scenario you have to get the most productivity per unit of energy used. Conventional mechanical transmission can experience substantial power loss through gears and clutches, particularly with the constant load variations associates with trimming cycle and loading cycle. This inefficiency not only requires more fuel to power-up mine ventilations systems but also causes extra waste heat. Thus, a power-efficient and precise control of the system is not only an engineering challenge but also a practical necessity.

Hydrostatic Transmission

Hydrostatic transmission is a simple, powerful solution for the unique challenges underground mining presents. This system is based on a hydraulic pump driven by the engine, which compresses fluid and is connected to a hydraulic motor that drives the wheels. This liquid power system has some outstanding features. For one, it offers infinite speed control enabling operators to gently and smoothly accelerate from a crawl to full speed without any gearshift bumps. This allows for more stability during loading, spotting and dumping, which decreases tire wear and cycle times.

Secondly, hydrostatic transmission is famous for having a high-power density and excellent efficiency especially in low-speed, high-torque applications which are prevalent within the mining industry. The drive is self-limiting in torque, providing protection to the system as well that could otherwise cause stalling and overloads resulting in costly equipment damage. It also allows for dynamic braking, in which the hydraulic motor is used as a pump to slow the machine and lessens wear on mechanical brake parts making it safer for downhill activities. This precision control, inherent protection and effective power transfer, work together to make hydrostatic transmissions ideal for the start/stop duty cycle required of a scooptram.
